What’s a wiki, you ask?
If you’ve already hopped over to Wikipedia to search the term “wiki,” you’re in good company. It turns out “wiki” was the top search term on Wikipedia this year (followed closely by The Beatles).
The irony is that all those people searching the term “wiki” were using a wiki to find more information about. . . a wiki. Still with us?
In short, a wiki is a collaborative website, which means that people, wherever they are, can work as a team to create, review, and edit content based on their expertise and knowledge about a subject. Wikipedia is the most extensive and well-known wiki, but anyone can create one. Some nonprofits use wikis to build their online communities and manage volunteers, and if you’ve been looking for a way to organize your community online, a wiki might be the way to go. If you need some inspiration, you can find some great examples of how nonprofits like CARE and the Earth Charter Initiative are using wikis at the Wikispaces blog.
