Rob Shinney is walking the Pacific Crest Trail, all 2658 miles of it.
But he’s not just doing it for bragging rights. He’s created his own non-profit organization, Hiking 4 HepC, and is hiking and fundraising to raise money and awareness for those affected by the Hepatitis C virus. You can read more about Rob’s NPO on his website, here.
Rob has taken on a pretty amazing personal challenge, and it’s even more admirable because of his goals to contribute to and facilitate a community of supporters. Here’s some more of his story, in his own words:
What he’s undertaking:
On the first day of May I will take my first step on a journey of 2658 miles. I will step on the Pacific Crest Trail at the Mexican border to begin a hike for all patients and friends and family of patients with Hepatitis C.
Why he’s hiking:
Why do I choose to walk 20 miles a day and sleep on the ground for 4 ½ months? Because having Hepatitis C is not something to be ashamed of, and too many of us are ashamed. I want to show the world a different picture of hepatitis C. I want to show the world a 55 year-old guy who’s carried the hepatitis C virus for 30+ years, who will carry a pack for 2658 miles and say I’ve made my mistakes yet I’m proud of who I am. I’ll walk up the mountains, slog through the snow, and cross the deserts.
Why he’s fundraising:
I have started this project to raise money for the Hepatitis C Caring Ambassadors. After trip expenses, every dime I raise will go to support this great organization as they do so much to help all of us with Hepatitis C.
Good luck, Rob! We’ll look forward to hearing about your journey!
