Happy MLK Day (On) from Firstgiving

It’s the beginning of an exciting week, and the buzz about Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a call to action, urging us to “Make it a day ON, not a day OFF.”

Taking a cue, perhaps, from non-profit organizations (among which MLK Day observance is most popular), there’s been an initiative to make today a day of service in honor of Dr. King.  Actually, the initiative has been around for a while, but this year people are really getting the word out.

The USA Service Blog has a bunch of guest posts honoring the life of Dr. King and ideas about how to participate in the Day of Service.  So does the official MLK Day of Service site.  You can search for an event or volunteer opportunity here.

We’re sure you can come up with lots of other good ways to serve today.  And whether the day for you is on or off, there are always ways to participate and contribute virtually.  For example, the American Red Cross is offering a “Be Red Cross Ready” online course to teach you how to respond to an emergency.   And if you’ve been thinking about fundraising for an NPO that you know is creating change, today would be a great day to make a donation or create your own fundraising page.

Let us know what you’re doing to honor Martin Luther King. Jr. in the comments section below.
