‘Tis the season of plunges! Whether you’re participating in a Penguin Plunge, Polar Plunge, Passion Plunge, or any other fundraising plunge event, the first time can seem mighty scary. This year, Firstgiving has its very own plunge team that will be fundraising and participating on behalf of Special Olympics Massachusetts. As the date comes closer, I find myself more and more apprehensive. To calm my nerves, I’ve collected various tips and hints for fellow first-time plungers. If you have any more tips, please send them along!
- Be sure to bring warm clothes to change into after the plunge and have them readily available. Sweatshirts, sweatpants and socks are especially recommended.
- Dress your feet–some plunges require footwear in order to participate. Sneakers, aqua socks, diving booties, or even wool socks are acceptable.
- Ask a friend or family member to come cheer you on and have your towel ready.
- Do not plunge after drinking alcohol or while ill.
- Before swimming, give yourself a few minutes to get used to the cold air. It can be shocking to go directly from a heated car into the water.
Good luck to all you plungers!
