There are 5,280 feet in a mile and 1,710 yards in a mile, but do you know how many quarters there are in a mile? Well, neither did I, until I came upon a fantastic fundraising page called Mile of Quarters. Evidently, it takes 68,000 quarters (a quarter collector’s dream!) to make a mile and Margaret Crites is ready to get some change to make some change. Margaret is raising money for the Rape Crisis Center of Robeson County, an amazing organization and her page is great example of a small non-profit taking charge and rallying their own supporters online!
The Rape Crisis Center of Robeson County opened in January 1991 and has helped over 300 victims with only 2 paid employees (The center relies heavily on dedicated volunteers). The center is located in a small, rural community in Southeastern North Carolina. A few months ago, Robeson county made the news by being named the 3rd most impoverished community in the nation. Their high school graduation rate is the lowest in the state, and has the highest number of children living in poverty in the state. The community struggles with issues of crime, drug abuse, child abuse, poverty, and unemployment.
According to her most recent update, Margaret has reached the first 1/10 of the mile!
Good luck Margaret!

WOW!
How cool is it that our little project made your blog!! That’s REALLY COOL.
I did want to update a couple of things – first, we work with about 300 victims EVERY YEAR in our agency. We recently learned that in April alone, our volunteers assisted more victims in the ER than about half the agencies in our state help in a year.
Second, we have gotten two $1,000 donations this week. We are now closing in on our second tenth of a mile!
THANKS to everyone who has been so supportive of our agency and our fundraiser!
